Be Prepared

These instructions are only a guide to walks and cycle routes in the area. Anyone walking or cycling far into the hills should take steps to ensure they have navigation equipment. NEVER venture into the hills without appropriate clothing, a map, compass, and a mobile telephone. In some places mobile telephones may not work but you should always consider taking one. Please also be aware of the conditions you will be walking in and consider the weather can change very quickly and visibility can be reduced alarmingly in a few minutes.

When walking near livestock please keep your dog/s on a lead.

Enjoy the beauty of our countryside and have fond memories of it !!

Local routes have been researched and a series of leaflets created for those who wish to walk, ride or drive in the area. Details of which are below:

The "Take 5" series of leaflets: Walks- Gentle, Slightly Longer, Strenuous, Using the Southern Upland Way, From the Car, Drives and Cycle Ride. Each category has 5 routes.

Walks vary from 1 to 12.5 miles (1.75 to 20 km) approx.

Cycle routes vary from 4.5 to 22 miles (7.5 to 35 km) approx.

Leaflets are available from Andy at Moffat Book Exchange in Moffat's Well Street, priced 25p each.

Moffat is not ideally suited to cycling, for the surrounding hills are steep. However, most of the traffic is on the A74(M) motorway, and the road which parallels it is part of the National Cycle Network.
Cycle distances are shown from Moffat Post Office and most roads carry little traffic. The selection of rides available will allow the visitor to enjoy the region from the saddle.
